Wireless Networks

Wireless services use Radio Waves.

Radio waves are created by a

Transmitter, travel through space, and

are received by a receiver.

The number of waves in 1 second is the

frequency.

MHz, KHz, GHz.

Cellular Coverage

Many variables affect coverage:

• Line of sight

• Terrain (hills, valleys)

• Tower height & location

• Phone type & antenna

• Clutter: buildings, trees

• Phone location: in a car, in a building

• Type of cell site antenna: high gain, low gain

• Radio Frequency: 800 MHz travels farther than 1900 MHz

Common Issues

Why it doesn’t always work

•Phone on car seat, in pocket or purse

•Inside a building, particularly metal buildings

•In a lower level of a building or parking garage

•Heavy tree coverage

•At Cell edge

•High frequency (1900) doesn’t go as far as low frequency (800)
