Winnipeg Duo creates Web 2.0 Startup and Brings Social Learning to Life

Facebook and MySpace have exploded onto the Internet and John Luxford and  Les Klassen founders of Dojo Learning want to put Winnipeg on the map as an innovate centre for Interactive media. The technology industry is calling this new Internet boom Web 2.0 and it is all about people and socializing on the Web. Dojo Learning is taking this social web one step further by creating an online training application that allows anyone to train their employees through conversational learning.

"We have integrated YouTube, Podcasts and have developed our own learning tools that let trainers and learners connect together in very engaging and exciting ways, but we did get some help along the way," says co-founder Les Klassen.

Organizations like New Media Manitoba (NMM), a non-profit association of professionals that advocate and support new media businesses have been an encouraging resource for Dojo Learning as we moved through development.

"New Media Manitoba has connected us with people, sources of funding and have given the opportunity to demonstrate our software in public forums. The encouragement from their organization has been motivating for us to keep developing Dojo," says Luxford.

Kevin Hnatiuk of New Media Manitoba knows that "Dojo Learning is a Winnipeg-based company that gets it.  I've used their online learning tool and it's not just good, it's great. Having researched and interviewed companies at some of the biggest Web Expos across North America, I can tell you these guys have built a web 2.0 application that places them in an elite class of web producers. I don't make these kinds of remarks lightly. They've really nailed this one."

Dojo Learning has been been tested with over 50 learners across Canada and has been been received very well. "The response has been outstanding, we delivered a family portfolio course to learners across the country and our learners loved using the software." Says executive director, Robin Millar of the Centre for Education and Work, a not-for-profit organization based on creating innovate workplace learning projects.

Winnipeg has a growing technology sector and has a developing pool of talented programmers and entrepreneurs. With support from industry and government, Winnipeg can continue to innovate.
